Grocerszon Background

From Vision to Venture

The seeds of Grocerszon were planted long before supply chain disruptions became headline news. In 2002, during the early days of international e-commerce, Maria Concepcion Powell, founder of the U.S. Women’s Grocers Association (US-WGA.org), recognized a growing imbalance in how essential goods—food, basic necessities, and pharmaceuticals—moved across borders and communities.

At the time, digital platforms for trade were still in their infancy, limited by access, infrastructure, and policy. Amazon had just expanded beyond books. Global B2B marketplaces were virtually non-existent. But Maria saw what others didn’t yet see: a future where technology could unify producers, distributors, and retailers across entire continents.

I saw early on that if we didn’t build our own supply chain infrastructure, we’d eventually be left depending on systems we don’t control. Grocerszon isn’t just a platform—it’s a promise to future generations that we’ll never be caught unprepared again.

To bring that vision to life, Ms. Powell launched the Economic Development Forum Between Three Nations, convening leaders and stakeholders from the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Over the course of 10 years, she hosted five international forums—one in each participating country—creating space for cross-border dialogue on trade, agriculture, food security, and the emerging potential of e-commerce. These forums weren’t just symbolic—they were strategic incubators where the earliest ideas behind Grocerszon began to take shape.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Maria became a national voice for inclusive, technology-driven commerce. She spoke at dozens of trade, grocer, and agricultural conferences, advocating for a system that would one day revitalize domestic production, empower rural communities, and protect national food and pharmaceutical security. Her message was clear: the future of supply isn’t foreign—it’s local, it’s digital, and it’s coordinated.

What began as foresight has now become a full-scale initiative. Grocerszon is the evolution of decades of leadership, advocacy, and preparation—a platform built for the moment Maria saw coming over 20 years ago. Today, that vision is more urgent than ever—and Grocerszon is ready to deliver on it.
